Telegram Privacy Settings for Phone Numbers and Photos
Telegram lets you limit who can see your phone number, find you through that number, or view your profile photo. These controls are useful because a Telegram account can expose an Australian mobile number, a recognisable image, and online patterns that connect a username with a real person.
The important distinction is visibility versus discovery. Restricting what appears on your profile does not necessarily stop somebody who already knows your digits from contacting you, while changing lookup settings does not erase copies of your number held elsewhere. The safest approach combines both controls with sensible photo and group settings.
Understand number visibility and lookup
Open Settings and look under Privacy and Settings for “Who can see my phone number” and “Who can find me by phone number.” Menu labels vary slightly between iOS, Android and Desktop, and the options may sit in a Calls area. The first concerns what appears on your profile; the second governs discovery through your digits.
Set number display to Nobody for the tightest profile rule, My Contacts if you want saved contacts to recognise you, or Everybody only when public discoverability is intentional. My Contacts means people you have added as Telegram contacts. Someone who already has your number may still recognise your account through contact matching, and Telegram may reveal information required for an active conversation.
Number lookup normally offers My Contacts or Everybody, rather than a plain Nobody option. Choose My Contacts to narrow searches, and pair it with Nobody for display if you want privacy without losing all contact discovery. No setting can make someone forget a number they already possess; block unwanted users and keep their messages out of your contact list.
Control who sees your profile photo
Photo visibility is a separate control, usually labelled “Who can see my profile photo,” with Nobody, My Contacts and Everybody choices. Use Nobody for a non-identifying avatar, or My Contacts if a familiar photo helps people you know recognise you. Public photos make it much easier to match a Telegram profile with social media, workplace directories or a university alumni group.
Choose an image that does not display an employer logo, school badge, licence plate, home frontage or other unique clue. That matters in Australian cities, where Sydney and Melbourne neighbourhood, gym, club and university chats can mix acquaintances with strangers. Existing copies can survive a setting change: someone may retain an old avatar, or a screenshot may show a photo posted in a group. Depending on the interaction, Telegram may still reveal your current avatar, so test visibility with an account outside your address book.
Review chats, groups and calls
Also review Last Seen and Online. Hiding it can prevent casual monitoring, while leaving it for contacts may help friends know when you are available. Restrict peer-to-peer calls to contacts when possible, because a voice conversation can reveal details even when your profile looks anonymous.
For groups and channels, check the option to hide members’ phone numbers in member lists. Also inspect any group-specific privacy controls and your role as an admin or owner. A hidden profile number does not automatically hide your username, avatar, messages or group membership, and moderators may receive participant information needed to manage a space.
Direct chats need separate thought. A stranger may learn more after you reply, add them to a contact, or participate in a mutual group. Forwarded messages and screenshots are outside your settings, so assume that anything posted can be copied. This is why a username can reduce the need to distribute your number without guaranteeing complete anonymity.
Manage number changes in Australia
Australian mobile numbers use the country code +61 and are written internationally without the leading zero, followed by 4 for mobile services. That makes a full number easy to expose in a group or support chat. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone customers can often keep the same digits when moving between carriers, so changing networks does not necessarily require a Telegram change.
If the actual digits change because you are replacing a line, moving between providers without keeping the number or recovering a lost SIM, a practical guide to changing Telegram numbers can help. Update the number only through the official app, and do not paste a login code into a support chat; Telegram staff should not request it.
After a change, review active sessions, remove the old device, check contact synchronisation and repeat the visibility tests. The Australian Communications and Media Authority regularly warns about scam calls and messages, so a hidden or unfamiliar Telegram number is not proof that a person is genuine. Verify unusual requests through a channel you already trust.
Audit identity clues beyond the phone number
A username and short bio often reveal more than you intend. A workplace title, exact suburb, birthday or regular posting time can narrow down your identity even when the number and photo are hidden. Use a unique username, remove precise biographical clues and avoid connecting the same account to several public-facing groups.
Synchronised contacts deserve attention too. Your Telegram address book may help other people identify you, while any number they have saved remains in their possession after you change yours. Review groups that import member lists, channel subscriber counts and bots that request a phone number; avoid uploading your address book to sites unrelated to the task.
Australian privacy law adds context but not automatic protection. The Privacy Act 1988 and Australian Privacy Principles regulate many Australian organisations, yet they do not automatically govern every personal Telegram conversation. Schedule a recurring review; calendar notes about the next leap year can provide a fixed reminder, although any annual date works.
Compare your settings and take action now
The practical differences are:
| Control | Available choices | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Phone-number display | Nobody, My Contacts, Everybody | Determines who can see the number shown on your profile. |
| Phone-number lookup | My Contacts, Everybody | Determines who can locate you by entering your number. |
| Profile photo | Nobody, My Contacts, Everybody | Restricts viewing of the current avatar, but not copies already shared. |
| Last seen and online | Nobody, My Contacts, Everybody | Restricts who can see your recent activity and online state. |
For a strong everyday setup, use Nobody for number display and profile photo, My Contacts for number lookup, and Nobody for Last Seen and Online if availability is not useful. People who rely on being contacted through a phone number may prefer My Contacts for display instead. Verify the result with a second account, then check that a group member list does not expose anything the profile controls were meant to hide.
Open Telegram now, adjust the number-display, number-lookup and photo controls, then test them before joining another group. Revisit the choices whenever you replace your number, change devices, add a new contact group or become a group administrator. A short review now reduces the chance that your phone number and familiar photo will link private conversations to your public identity.
